The Clements Red Cross is an organization that provides frequent
opportunities for students to contribute to the community.

Supporting the expansion and progress of our club, our sponsor, Mrs. Hoogerwerf ("Mrs. H"), is the school nurse and, if need be, may be reached at the nurses' office during regular school hours. Regularly, Red Cross meetings are held every Thursday morning starting at 7:00 AM. During each meeting, we offer sign-up sheets for many service events and annouce upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Objective The purpose of the American Red Cross youth program is to train youth to include volunteerism as an essential part of a balanced life by exposing them to the mission and the fundamental principles of the American Red Cross. This program teaches youth how to organize, lead, sustain, and build a volunteer organization and provides them with opportunities to try new things. The youth are involved hands-on in the programming of the American Red Cross of Greater Houston, and they are encouraged to generate new programs. The Greater Houston Area Red Cross honored its “Everyday Heroes 2008” at a luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Houston at the Junior League.

Red Cross honored an individual, organization and corporation that went above and beyond to help military personnel and their families. Funds raised from the luncheon benefit the Greater Houston Area Red Cross’ Military Services. Last year the Military Services department assisted more than 13,000 military families with emergency communications, facilitated emergency leaves and helped secure financial assistance and mental health counseling for families in crisis. Military Services staff attended deployment briefings and informed nearly 13,000 military personnel and family members about Red Cross services.

A Timeline —American Red Cross history in the Greater Houston Area. The history of the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross parallels the calamities and disasters that have befallen the area. Hurricanes, floods, explosions, fires, and the effects of war on local residents are backdrops to this 91- year story. Jesse Jones Jesse H. Jones, elected chairman of the War Fund Drive in 1917, was presented with a fund raising goal of $150,000 but went on to collect $250,000. The remarkable accomplishment stood out because the price of cotton had dropped dramatically that year, causing financial distress throughout the South. Mr. Jones went on to become director of military relief for the American Red Cross in Washington. He was appointed to the Red Cross War Council and became a delegate to the European conferences which formed the League of Red Cross Societies. He later became U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Disaster training is offered every other month through 4-day mini-institutes at the Greater Houston Area Red Cross Chapter Headquarters at 2700 Southwest Freeway, Houston. Disaster classes are also offered at various other times, both at Chapter Headquarters and at the Houston area branch offices. Community Services Program The obstacles associated with aging and disabilities can lead to isolation, loss of independence, unfulfilled potential and diminished quality of life. For these clients transportation is more than a ride—it means mobility and a degree of independence. The American Red Cross provides non-emergency van transportation for persons who need medical attention and have no other means of transport. The American Red Cross door-to-door service operates primarily to and from the Texas Medical Center. Alternate destinations are serviced based on availability of drivers and vehicles. The American Red Cross Community Services Transportation program is made possible because of funding provided by the United Way of Texas Gulf Coast, donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
